Niall has an older brother named Greg and his parents names are Maura and Bobby. Maura and Bobby divorced when Niall was 5 years old. Niall was at Coláiste Mhuire in Mullinger, a Christian Brothers school in Dublin, before auditioning for Series 7 of the X factor in 2010.

Niall auditioned for the seventh series of the X factor during their Dublin visit. His first performance was "So Sick" by Ne Yo which drew a mixed response from the judges. Louis Walsh liked his performance and 2 of the other judges agreed, sending Niall through to the Boot Camp stage with three yes votes out of four.

At Boot Camp, Niall performed “Champagne Supernova” by Oasis for the judges. Unfortunately for Niall he was rejected at this stage of the competition, but Simon Cowell threw him a lifeline by inviting Niall to form One Direction with 4 other unsuccessful singers, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson.

Nialls musical interests include Westlife (obviously),Take That and Enz Inc. He is a big fan of big band music and is a big fan of Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble. He also is a talented guitarist, having received a guitar as a christmas present during his childhood. His parents first noted Niall’s singing ability during a family car journey. His auntie remarked that she thought the radio was on, when in fact it was Niall Singing!

Niall suffers from ornithophobia, a fear of birds in 2012. This originated after a childhood attack by a pigeon. As the joker in the band, Niall has said his main aims in life are to “have a laugh” and to “enjoy every minute of life in the band”.

As well as being a talented singer, Niall also plays the guitar and lists his interests as “Having a laugh” and “enjoying every minute” of life as a boy band member.
